Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

-CHF Swiss Frank (Swissy)
-CAD Dollar Kanada (Looney)
-AUD Dollar Australia (Aussie)
-NZD Dollar New Zealand (Kiwi)

- EUR/JPY    :   EUR/USD kali USD/JPY

-GBP/JPY     :   GBP/USD kali USD/JPY

The Secrets To: Emotion Free Trading

THE TALE OF TWO TRADERS

Our first trader is Ned. Ned is an off-the-floor trader who day trades the S&P 500 Futures. He’s been trying to be consistently successful for the last six months. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out very well. But it’s not because of his methods that he’s having so much trouble. No, the main reason Ned is not making the kind of money he wants is because he cannot control his emotions and consistently act in his own best interest. From the very beginning, Ned was confident he would be successful day trading the S&P’s. He’d been very successful in his previous business. Ned owned a retail printing company and he’d learned to make good sound business decisions that helped him become very successful. He almost never made any major mistakes that were detrimental to the business. In fact, in over the nine years he owned the company, he really prided himself in always looking at the big picture and keeping his business moving forward. On the rare occasion when something did go wrong, Ned worked at lightening speed to fix the problem, and many times he turned the crisis into an opportunity.
Because of the smart decisions he’d often made, Ned was sure he could carry this into his new career of commodity trading. At least that’s what he thought would happen. So, when Nedreceived a generous offer from a corporation to  buy his printing company, he decided this might be the time to take the money and run.
It wasn’t that difficult for him to decide to sell. He definitely loved having his own business and, of course, it was that much more rewarding because he was successful. But for the last two years, he’d been so busy that he was working about 65-70 hours a week. That left very little time for him to spend with his family. This made the decision to sell very easy for him.
Another thing that made Ned’s decision easy was that he wanted to try a new business. He had learned as much as he could about commodity trading. He’d read as many books and magazines he could get his hands on. He definitely thought he could transfer his successful business practices to commodity trading. Thus, he could trade from home and be able to spend alot more time with his family. He was quite confident he would be a success in this endeavor too.

ACTING IN YOUR OWN BEST INTEREST

You will see this theme throughout this book. It is the most important concept you can learn in order to be a successful trader. If you can master this skill, you can be very successful in this business. But without it, you are destined to fail. It really is that simple. If you can learn to act in your own best interest, you will make a lot of money trading. If you don’t learn to act in your own best interest, you will lose a lot of money trading.

You see, the (futures) markets work in a very different way than almost everything else in life. There is more freedom in this business than probably any other business in the world. You can do what you want, when you want, pretty much any time the market is open. The only thing that will hold you back is running out of money. Other than that, you have all the freedom in the world to do whatever you want in the market.

Trading really is different from everything else we do in life. In the everyday environment, you can have control (at least somewhat) by taking actions that affect the environment. For example, if you wanted to listen to some music, you would have to turn on the radio. If you push the power button on the radio, music will come out of the radio. If  you don’t push the power button, the radio will not turn on.

Moon Dust May Be Worse Than Apollo Missions Found

Monday, April 27th, 2009

The first astronauts to walk on the moon in the 1960s and 1970s were inundated by sticky lunar dust that clung to their spacesuits whenever they ventured outside. Now, four decades later, a self-funded study by an Australian physicist has found a link between the dust’s stickiness and the angle of the sun at the time of each moonwalk.

The new research, which drew on the personal files and paper charts of physicist Brian O’Brien of Perth, suggests that future lunar astronauts may have greater problems with dust adhesion in the middle half of the day than NASA’s Apollo missions faced in the early morning

Dust is the number one environmental hazard on the moon, yet its movements and adhesive properties are little understood,” said O’Brien, who was the principal investigator for the Dust Detector Experiment on several Apollo lunar landing missions between 1969 and 1970. His new research will be detailed in the Geophysical Research Letters.

Sticky science

The new study points out that the electrostatic adhesive forces of dust decreases as sunlight on the moon decreases. Furthermore, O’Brien believes that some sort of lunar shack for on-duty moonwalkers may be mandatory to provide for a sunlight-thwarting, dust-free working environment.

“It follows that on future lunar expeditions, powerful electrostatic adhesion of lunar dust during the middle half of each lunar day could cause greater dust problems than experienced by Apollo astronauts,” he relates.

This model by O’Brien infers that Apollo astronaut problems from clinging dust, at solar elevations much less than 45 degrees, may have been driven by other forces. Mechanical bonding properties intrinsic to lunar dust, he suggests, could explain partial success by moonwalkers in shedding gear of dust with “moon brushes.”

Detecting moon dust

Invented by O’Brien, the matchbox-sized detectors for the DDE study were planted on the moon during the Apollo 11, 12, 14 and 15 missions. O’Brien carried out that work while serving as a professor of space science at Rice University in Houston, Texas, from 1963 to 1968.

O’Brien was one of seven scientists chosen by NASA from 90 applicants to provide sophisticated instruments in remote scientific stations deployed by Apollo astronauts. While another of his projects, the Charged Particle Lunar Environment Experiment, was lost on Apollo 13, it was deployed during the Apollo 14 moon landing mission.

It turns out that NASA had misplaced its computer tapes of the experimental data but O’Brien preserved his copies.

I started to revisit the personal Dust Detector Experiment (DDE) data in 2007 after learning in late 2006 that the sole source of data was with me,” he told SPACE.com.

Spray of debris

In another finding by O’Brien, Apollo 11’s DDE made the first measurements suggesting that rocket exhaust caused significant contamination of deployed equipment.

Apollo 11’s dust detectors, O’Brien said, showed the impact of rocket exhaust spit out from the departure of the Eagle lunar module’s ascent stage. This stage was the home, hotel and vehicle back into lunar orbit for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and a key step in returning them to home planet Earth.

Eagle’s liftoff from Tranquility Base caused quite a stir, environmentally speaking.

There was significant contamination of astronaut-deployed hardware by kicked-up lunar material. So much so that the spray of debris caused by the departing rocket motor led to the overheating and early failure of Apollo 11’s Passive Seismic Experiment – the first major scientific experiment put on the moon by human hands

A lesson learned here is where best to place equipment given future landings and takeoffs of moon vehicles. For Apollo 11’s DDE, it was deployed roughly 55 feet (17 meters) away from the Eagle lander.

“Such damage was a foreseen possibility… accepted on this first mission in interests of astronaut safety. These benchmark measurements on the moon appear unused and unreferenced in theoretical modeling of effects of rocket exhausts,” O’Brien explains.

Considering NASA’s plan to return humans to the lunar surface for longer stints, there’s another lesson underscored by O’Brien’s work. That is, the need to better preserve, dust off, and revisit Apollo data.

Ringkasan Padat Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Buku The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People ditulis oleh Stephen  Stephen R. Covey dan pertama kali dipublikasikan pada tahun 1989.

Sedikit isi tentang Ringkasan Padat Seven Habits of Highly Effective People adalah sebagai berikut:

Mereka mengembangkan dua peraturan dasar.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Stephen R. Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People®, has been a top-seller for the simple  reason that it ignores trends and pop psychology for proven principles of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity. Celebrating its fifteenth year of helping people solve personal and professional problems, this special anniversary edition includes a new foreword and afterword written by Covey exploring the question of whether the 7 Habits are still relevant and answering some of the most common questions he has received over the past 15 years.
Habit 1 : Be Proactive

Your life doesn’t just “happen.” Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? That question may appear a little trite, but think about it for a moment. Are you–right now–who you want to be, what you dreamed you’d be, doing what you always wanted to do? Be honest. Sometimes people find themselves achieving victories that are empty–successes that have come at the expense of things that were far more valuable to them. If you ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step you take gets you to the wrong place faster.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

So live a more balanced existence, you have to recognize that not doing everything that comes along is okay. There’s no need to overextend yourself. All it takes is realizing that it’s all right to say no when necessary and then focus on your highest priorities.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Think Win-Win isn’t about being nice, nor is it a quick-fix technique. It is a character-based code for human interaction and collaboration.

Most of us learn to base our self-worth on comparisons and competition. We think about succeeding in terms of someone else failing–that is, if I win, you lose; or if you win, I lose. Life becomes a zero-sum game. There is only so much pie to go around, and if you get a big piece, there is less for me; it’s not fair, and I’m going to make sure you don’t get anymore. We all play the game, but how much fun is it really?

Win-win sees life as a cooperative arena, not a competitive one. Win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. Win-win means agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying. We both get to eat the pie, and it tastes pretty darn good!

A person or organization that approaches conflicts with a win-win attitude possesses three vital character traits:

  1. Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments
  2. Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others
  3. Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

Communication is the most important skill in life. You spend years learning how to read and write, and years learning how to speak. but what about listening? What training have you had that enables you to listen so you really, deeply understand another human being? Probably none, right?

If you’re like most people, you probably seek first to be understood; you want to get your point across. And in doing so, you may ignore the other person completely, pretend that you’re listening, selectively hear only certain parts of the conversation or attentively focus on only the words being said, but miss the meaning entirely. So why does this happen? Because most people listen with the intent to reply, not to understand. You listen to yourself as you prepare in your mind what you are going to say, the questions you are going to ask, etc. You filter everything you hear through your life experiences, your frame of reference. You check what you hear against your autobiography and see how it measures up. And consequently, you decide prematurely what the other person means before he/she finishes communicating. Do any of the following sound familiar?

“Oh, I know just how you feel. I felt the same way.” “I had that same thing happen to me.” “Let me tell you what I did in a similar situation.”

Because you so often listen autobiographically, you ten to respond in one of four ways:
Evaluating: You judge and then either agree or disagree.
Probing: You ask questions from your own frame of reference.
Advising: You give counsel, advice, and solutions to problems.
Interpreting: You analyze others’ motives and behaviors based on your own experiences.

Habit 6: Synergize

So put it simply, synergy means “two heads are better than one.” Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn’t just happen on its own. It’s a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty–you name it.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have–you. It means having a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of your life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Here are some examples of activities:
Physical: Beneficial eating, exercising, and resting
Social/Emotional: Making social and meaningful connections with others
Mental: Learning, reading, writing, and teaching
Spiritual: Spending time in nature, expanding spiritual self through mediation, music, art, prayer, or service

As you renew yourself in each of the four areas, you create growth and change in your life. Sharpen the Saw keeps you fresh so you can continue to practice the other six habits. You increase your capacity to produce and handle the challenges around you. Without this renewal, the body becomes weak, the mind mechanical, the emotions raw, the spirit insensitive, and the person selfish. Not a pretty picture, is it?

Feeling good doesn’t just happen. Living a life in balance means taking the necessary time to renew yourself. It’s all up to you. You can renew yourself through relaxation. Or you can totally burn yourself out by overdoing everything. You can pamper yourself mentally and spiritually. Or you can go through life oblivious to your well-being. You can experience vibrant energy. Or you can procrastinate and miss out on the benefits of good health and exercise. You can revitalize yourself and face a new day in peace and harmony. Or you can wake up in the morning full of apathy because your get-up-and-go has got-up-and-gone. Just remember that every day provides a new opportunity for renewal–a new opportunity to recharge yourself instead of hitting the wall. All it takes is the desire, knowledge, and skill.

Spot Market and the Forwards and Futures Markets

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

There are actually three ways that institutions, corporations and individuals trade forex: the spot market, the forwards market and the futures market. The forex trading in the spot market always has been the largest market because it is the “underlying” real asset that the forwards and futures markets are based on. In the past, the futures market was the most popular venue for traders because it was available to individual investors for a longer period of time. However, with the advent of electronic trading, the spot market has witnessed a huge surge in activity and now surpasses the futures market as the preferred trading market for individual investors and speculators. When people refer to the forex market, they usually are referring to the spot market. The forwards and futures markets tend to be more popular with companies that need to hedge their foreign exchange risks out to a specific date in the future.

What is the spot market?
More specifically, the spot market is where currencies are bought and sold according to the current price. That price, determined by supply and demand, is a reflection of many things, including current interest rates, economic performance, sentiment towards ongoing political situations (both locally and internationally), as well as the perception of the future performance of one currency against another. When a deal is finalized, this is known as a “spot deal”. It is a bilateral transaction by which one party delivers an agreed-upon currency amount to the counter party and receives a specified amount of another currency at the agreed-upon exchange rate value. After a position is closed, the settlement is in cash. Although the spot market is commonly known as one that deals with transactions in the present (rather than the future), these trades actually take two days for settlement.

What are the forwards and futures markets?
Unlike the spot market, the forwards and futures markets do not trade actual currencies. Instead they deal in contracts that represent claims to a certain currency type, a specific price per unit and a future date for settlement.

In the forwards market, contracts are bought and sold OTC between two parties, who determine the terms of the agreement between themselves.

In the futures market, futures contracts are bought and sold based upon a standard size and settlement date on public commodities markets, such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In the U.S., the National Futures Association regulates the futures market. Futures contracts have specific details, including the number of units being traded, delivery and settlement dates, and minimum price increments that cannot be customized. The exchange acts as a counterpart to the trader, providing clearance and settlement.

Both types of contracts are binding and are typically settled for cash for the exchange in question upon expiry, although contracts can also be bought and sold before they expire. The forwards and futures markets can offer protection against risk when trading currencies. Usually, big international corporations use these markets in order to hedge against future exchange rate fluctuations, but speculators take part in these markets as well. (For a more in-depth introduction to futures, see Futures Fundamentals.)

The foreign exchange market (forex or FX for short) is one of the most exciting, fast-paced markets around. Until recently, forex trading in the currency market had been the domain of large financial institutions, corporations, central banks, hedge funds and extremely wealthy individuals. The emergence of the internet has changed all of this, and now it is possible for average investors to buy and sell currencies easily with the click of a mouse through online brokerage accounts.

Daily currency fluctuations are usually very small. Most currency pairs move less than one cent per day, representing a less than 1% change in the value of the currency. This makes foreign exchange one of the least volatile financial markets around. Therefore, many currency speculators rely on the availability of enormous leverage to increase the value of potential movements. In the retail forex market, leverage can be as much as 250:1. Higher leverage can be extremely risky, but because of round-the-clock trading and deep liquidity, foreign exchange brokers have been able to make high leverage an industry standard in order to make the movements meaningful for currency traders.

Extreme liquidity and the availability of high leverage have helped to spur the market’s rapid growth and made it the ideal place for many traders. Positions can be opened and closed within minutes or can be held for months. Currency prices are based on objective considerations of supply and demand and cannot be manipulated easily because the size of the market does not allow even the largest players, such as central banks, to move prices at will.

The forex market provides plenty of opportunity for investors. However, in order to be successful, a currency trader has to understand the basics behind currency movements.

The goal of this forex tutorial is to provide a foundation for investors or traders who are new to the foreign currency markets. We’ll cover the basics of exchange rates, the market’s history and the key concepts you need to understand in order to be able to participate in this market. We’ll also venture into how to start trading foreign currencies and the different types of strategies that can be employed.
The foreign exchange market is the “place” where currencies are traded. Currencies are important to most people around the world, whether they realize it or not, because currencies need to be exchanged in order to conduct foreign trade and business. If you are living in the U.S. and want to buy cheese from France, either you or the company that you buy the cheese from has to pay the French for the cheese in euros (EUR). This means that the U.S. importer would have to exchange the equivalent value of U.S. dollars (USD) into euros. The same goes for traveling. A French tourist in Egypt can’t pay in euros to see the pyramids because it’s not the locally accepted currency. As such, the tourist has to exchange the euros for the local currency, in this case the Egyptian pound, at the current exchange rate.

The need to exchange currencies is the primary reason why the forex market is the largest, most liquid financial market in the world. It dwarfs other markets in size, even the stock market, with an average traded value of around U.S. $2,000 billion per day. (The total volume changes all the time, but as of April 2004, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) reported that the forex market traded U.S. $1,900 billion per day.)

One unique aspect of this international market is that there is no central marketplace for foreign exchange. Rather, currency trading is conducted electronically over-the-counter (OTC), which means that all transactions occur via computer networks between traders around the world, rather than on one centralized exchange. The market is open 24 hours a day, five and a half days a week, and currencies are traded worldwide in the major financial centers of London, New York, Tokyo, Zurich, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris and Sydney – across almost every time zone. This means that when the trading day in the U.S. ends, the forex market begins anew in Tokyo and Hong Kong. As such, the forex market can be extremely active any time of the day, with price quotes changing constantly.
